36 Exposures with Carli

Some photographers arrive at a boudoir shoot like they're running a traveling circus. Multiple bags of photo gear. A bunch of stands, six lights, a reflector the size of a satellite dish. A plan so detailed it might as well be laminated.

Sometimes, that's me. This time, I arrived with a camera or two and a pair of eyeballs. That was enough for my shoot with Carli.

Carli and her partner had just gotten married. The house was quiet in that newlywed way, like the walls were still getting used to the idea. Outside, the day was bright and forgiving. Inside, the light wandered through the rooms looking for something interesting to land on. I followed it around like a detective. No strobes. No reflector. No complicated contraptions. Just windows doing what windows have done since the invention of walls.

And Carli.

She had ideas, which is always the best starting point. Denim. Calvin Kleins. Converse sneakers. A bridal veil. Lingerie. The sort of wardrobe that looks like a mood board collided with a Saturday morning and decided to cooperate.

The denim and sneakers gave us something playful. Casual. Like someone halfway through getting dressed or halfway through getting undressed, depending on how poetic you’re feeling about it.

The bridal veil was different. Suddenly the room felt quieter. Weddings do that to objects. A piece of fabric becomes a symbol, which is a lot of pressure for fabric.

We also did a few frames with nothing but a white sheet. No theatrics. Just soft light and the kind of confidence that makes a photograph breathe a little slower.

My favorite stretch of the shoot might have been the green set. Green outfit. Green sheets. The light dipping a little lower in the sky and turning everything moody and cinematic. Same house, same camera, same human being. Completely different atmosphere.

Photography is funny that way. Change the light and suddenly the story changes too.

By the time we finished, we had something I always hope for in a boudoir session. Variety that still feels like one person. Light and airy frames that feel like a Sunday morning. Darker, moodier ones that feel like the quiet part of evening.

Carli’s partner was around during the shoot, and we captured some photos of the two of them together as well. Those deserve their own story, which I’ll share in another post soon. Newlyweds have a particular electricity about them, and it would be rude to rush past that. But this post is about Carli.

A sunny house. A few good windows. Denim, sneakers, lace, and a veil. A photographer wandering from room to room looking for light. Sometimes, that's all you need.
